BREAKING Boca Juniors vs River Plate postponed following heavy rain in Buenos

The Copa Libertadores Final showdown between bitter rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate has been postponed following heavy rain in Buenos Aires.

The match between the two Argentine powerhouses is the most highly-anticipated encounter in South America, with CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez this week declaring: “There’s never been a final like this in 58 years.”

But due to a waterlogged pitch following a day of continued heavy rain, the game has been called off.

The re-scheduled encounter will take place at 7PM GMT on Sunday, November 11.

Fans of the home side had been steadily making their way to the game throughout the day, despite the continued downpour in the Argentine capital.

But gradually, a pitch that already struggles to shed water was deemed unplayable by match officials.

This season’s final is the last in which the winners will be decided over two legs, with CONMEBOL adopting a single-match format at a neutral venue from 2019.

Argentine football has been tarnished by violence in recent years and only home fans will be able to attend each leg in keeping with a ban on away supporters introduced five years ago.

The last time the teams met in the Libertadores in 2015 Boca fans attacked River players with pepper spray at halftime and the referee called off the match with Boca kicked out of the competition.
