The Frenchman was in line to leave the club in the summer after appearing to be deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

And after being fined by Mourinho for going AWOL whilst on pre-season tour of the USA, he began the season lacking confidence and in woeful form.

But the Frenchman has recovered magnificently to score five goals in his last four Premier League appearances, winning the club’s Player of the Month award.

And speaking on Martial’s U-turn at the club, Mourinho has revealed he set a difficult path for his player in order for him to realise his “phenomenal talent”.

“It is up to his talent, because he has phenomenal talent”

“I never gave up,” he told MUFC.

“I never gave up my feelings that this was the right way for him, even if he had to go through difficult moments.

“I knew that for him to become a really top player, he needed to overcome some barriers that I put on the road for him.

“It is up to his talent, because he has phenomenal talent.

“It was just a question of him understanding what a top player is because there is a big difference between a top talent and a top player.”

United are rumoured to be readying a new £58m five-year contract for the 22-year-old following his inspired turnaround at the club.

Martial also earned a recall to his national team having been omitted since March earlier this year.

And France boss Didier Deschamps agrees with Mourinho that Martial’s rough patches have made him a better player.

He said: “Anthony has been with the national team for a while now. He’s experienced both good and bad times, which is also the case for his club.

“What he’s currently achieving with Manchester United is closer to what he’s able to do regularly. I’m talking about commitment and efficiency in front of goal.

“He’s a young player and I hope he is becoming more mature.

“He has proved that on the pitch by how important he’s been for Manchester United for a few weeks already.

“It’s obvious by Jose Mourinho’s choice [to make Martial a first-teamer] and what he’s doing on the pitch.”
