All-Star audit reveals ineligible voting

Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager Greg Carpenter has allayed fears that voting on the inaugural The All-Star Mile has been compromised despite admitting that a portion of votes on the race are ineligible.

The terms and conditions of voting in The All-Star Mile only allow individuals to vote once in favour of the horse they’d like to see compete in the $5 million feature race, to be run at Flemington on March 16.

The competition allows one vote per person.

But an individual, known as ‘Mick the bricklayer’, created multiple new Google-based email addresses and voted multiple times on The All-Star Mile on Wednesday before alerting Melbourne radio station RSN927 to his activity.

However, Carpenter was adamant that enterprising individuals who create multiple email addresses can be traced through a voting verification process which will be conducted once voting closes at 12pm (AEDT) on Monday.

Carpenter says approximately two per cent of the vote – about 2500 in total – has been in breach of the rules but that the composition of the current top-20 horses has been ‘totally unaffected’.

“There’s been no concerted campaign in favour of any one horse and there hasn’t been a person that’s sat there and created 100 email addresses,” Carpenter told RSN927’s Racing Pulse on Thursday morning.

“The terms and conditions of The All-Star Mile are very clear in that people are only eligible to vote once, and anybody who does so is in breach of the terms and conditions.

“It has been possible for people to submit more than one vote by creating multiple email addresses but we are able to track all of those multiple votes and in the 72-hour verification process of voting, which will commence when voting closes on Monday, those votes will be removed.”

Carpenter says the well-publicised vote leaderboard for The All-Star Mile will disappear from Friday midday until the conclusion of voting three days later to ‘build suspense’.
