‘We don’t have a friendship any more’: Savage Garden’s Daniel Jones admits he doesn’t have a ‘healthy relationship’ with Darren Hayes… and wouldn’t reunite the band despite ‘running out of money’

Savage Garden’s Daniel Jones has admitted he doesn’t have a ‘healthy relationship’ with former band member Darren Hayes.

The 45-year-old Australia singer walked away from the two-piece group in 2001, and the pair have alluded to a massive falling out in the past.

He revealed he doesn’t ‘have a friendship’ with Darren and hasn’t seen him in several years, adding that he wouldn’t reunite the band despite ‘running out of money’ from its success.

‘I saw him at my manager’s wedding in Los Angeles a couple of years ago. We just acknowledged each other. We said hello,’ Jones told radio show 97.3’s Bianca, Mike & Bob on Thursday.

‘We didn’t delve into the past. That’s how our relationship functions these days. We don’t have the most healthy, workable relationship any more.

The musician added: ‘I still love the guy dearly. We are just different people. There’s no wrongdoing. It’s just different directions and different people. We just don’t have a friendship any more or working relationship.’

The Truly Madly Deeply singer then shot down any plans for a reunion tour, claiming any kind of comeback would seem ‘calculated’ and like ‘bulls**t’.

‘Our legacy is that we have injected a bit of love into the planet … and if we tried to go back and recreate that I think it would be calculated and BS. The answer is no,’ Daniel said.

Jones, who married Hi-5 singer Kathleen de Leon in 2005, left the music industry in 2015, but admitted he has considered returning to songwriting.

‘I stopped for a long time and I’ve only just recently started to think about which direction I want to take my life in at this point. Obviously Savage Garden has set us up quite well and we’re quite comfortable, but the money’s running out,’ he said.

While the former Brisbane-based musician now lives in Las Vegas, his life is a far cry from that of a popstar – working hands-on with a small team to buy and sell houses.

And years after calling time on the group, Daniel says he doesn’t miss his old life, preferring instead to live off the radar as much as possible.

In a previous interview with news.com.au Darren echoed similar sentiments, confirming that the duo wouldn’t re-form and likening a band to a marriage.

‘In our case we had a marriage that ended in divorce. People don’t get married by accident and they don’t get divorced by accident,’ he said.

‘There are reasons why musical relationships are magical and those same reasons are sometimes why they can’t last.’

The duo’s smash hits included I Knew I Loved You, Truly Madly Deeply and To The Moon & Back.
