Carlton are set to join Adelaide as AFLW finals hosts, while Brisbane’s upset loss has confirmed the matchups.
Adelaide topped Conference A and will host Geelong, while Carlton were 25 points ahead at halftime on Sunday against the Western Bulldogs and will finish top of Conference B.
That will give the Blues a home final against Fremantle next weekend, with the two winners through to the grand final.
The times and dates for the two preliminary finals are yet to be confirmed.
The Lions, who lost last year’s grand final to the Western Bulldogs, had their slim finals hopes in Conference B snuffed out on Sunday with an upset six-point loss to Collingwood.
There is plenty of controversy around the new conference system, with Conference A much stronger than B.
Expansion side North Melbourne and Melbourne are the unlucky Conference A sides to miss out on the finals.
Melbourne finished fourth and will have the same 4-3 record as Carlton, but probably with a better percentage.
