Two men are dead and a driver was badly injured when a ute struck a tree near Lancefield

Two men in their 30s died in a horror road crash in Lancefield last night while another is fighting for life in hospital.

Police say a ute crashed into a tree beside Rochford Road, near Collivers Road, around 6.55pm.

Two male passengers from Kyneton, aged 36 and 31, died at the scene.

The driver, a 43-year-old man from Newham, was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Detective Sergeant Jarrod Dwyer said the driver was in a critical condition.

“The male driver was flown after being rescued by emergency services after he was initially trapped in the vehicle,” he told Channel 9.

“He was cut from the driver’s seat and flown to the Alfred in a critical condition.”

Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Unit are today investigating.

The double fatality takes Victoria’s road toll to 68 compared to 48 this time last year.
