Jorge Masvidal scored a massive upset when he knocked out former title challenger Darren Till with a highlight-reel punch at UFC Fight Night 147 in London. The crowd was firmly in favour of homeboy Till during the fight and were hoping for their favourite fighter to get back to winning ways after his loss to Tyron Woodley in September last year. But Masvidal (33-13 MMA, 10-6 UFC) changed the script as he finished Till (17-2-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC) in the second round at the O2 Arena in London.
The fight was an incredible back and forth affair as both Till and Masvidal looked to score knockouts. At the start, Masvidal fired a stomping kick directly in the groin of Till. He immediately apologized, and Till took only a brief break to get back. As soon as the fight restarted, Till landed a clean left hand that knocked Masvidal to the floor. But the home favourite couldn’t finish “Gamebred” as he made his way back to his feet.
In the second round, Masvidal was able to break free from Till’s pressure as he landed a huge left hand on his opponent’s face. The punch sent Till crashing to the floor as Masvidal pounced to finish off the job. The referee stopped the contest at the 3:05 mark to the hand the victory to Masvidal.
“I love the fight,” Masvidal said after the win.
“It’s a cherry on top that I got the victory, but it’s the fight that I really love. I’ve been fighting as long as I can remember. I come from a very humble background, but I keep doing what I do. I got dropped in the first, and that made me wake up. I wanted to get him back immediately. I love the scrap – Darren is so tough. Before I dropped him, I hit him with some bombs and the dude just smiled at me like I do to other people. The kid is headed far – he is going places for sure.”
In the co-main event, Jamaican Leon Edwards scored his biggest win to date in the UFC. Edwards outwrestled Gunnar Nelson to get his seventh straight victory. The judges scored the contest got 29-27, 29-28 and 28-29 to hand a split-decision win to Edwards.
In another fight, undefeated light heavyweight prospect Dominick Reyes extended his UFC winning streak to five after edging out Volkan Oezdemir via split decision at UFC London.
